Alcester, Warwickshire-based, Walls & Ceilings International Ltd has added a new Volvo FM to its distribution fleet, after the performance of a similar vehicle purchased two years ago.
Operating a mixed marque fleet of 11 trucks for own-account distribution work, the company's latest 8x2 rigid chassis features a 6,000mm wheelbase and a hydraulically-steered rear tag axle.
"We bought a similar specification Volvo FM two years ago and it has performed very well on our nationwide distribution work," notes Julian Workman, Director at Walls & Ceilings International Ltd. "The only difference this time is that we've upped the engine power output from 420 to 460hp."
Supplied by Pete Swinnerton, Transport Solutions Executive at Truck & Bus Wales & West Ltd, the new Volvo FM was specified with Volvo's D13K engine coupled to a 12 speed, I-Shift automated transmission system. Completing the powertrain assembly is an RSS1356 single reduction drive axle with a ratio of 2.79:1.
The twin eight tonne front axles come with parabolic spring steel suspension, whilst the 19 tonne rear bogie is equipped with air suspension. The Volvo's 26-foot Lawrence David curtainside body is joined by a Moffett Mounty forklift, giving the driver complete autonomy when unloading at building sites or remote areas. "Volvo trucks are a solid, top class product. The sales experience at Wales and West Truck and Bus is good and our drivers love the FM rigids with the rear-steer tag axle," reports Julian, adding, "The drivers occasionally do nights out, so we opted for the Globetrotter cab with Drive Plus and 1 Bed Resting Packages."
